North Hills International School

Sports Day at NIS

After much anticipation, excitement, and practice, North Hills International School’s Sports Day took place on Wednesday, 15th February 2023, at the Madina AstroTurf. Everyone from every house, Houses Finch (Red), Canary (Yellow), Parakeet (Green), and Grosbeak (Blue) were pumped for this event. After all, NIS sports was back!

During the week in which this exciting event was to occur, you could feel the adrenaline rush from everyone. Flags were being made, songs and slogans were being composed, as well as selections of participants. The confidence from each house was marvelous. No one thought of not being ‘first’.

Finally, the long-awaited day arrived. For those who were participating, there was a little nervousness, but overall, the feelings of eagerness, anticipation, and enthusiasm were visible in a way, from everyone: teachers, students, parents, everyone! The event started around 9 am when it seemed everyone had arrived and had settled. It was a beautiful sunny day, and all the house colours (red, yellow, blue, and green) were vibrant among organized rows from the t-shirts everyone was wearing, seated under canopies, chanting and singing to show support for their house and their fellow housemates participating.

Rules were announced, the nurse was seated, all houses had marched across the field, opening performances were done, and it was time to start. It was lots and lots of fun. A whole lot of games and activities took place. In addition, you could tell everyone was trying their best for their respective houses. There were relay races, soccer competitions, sack races, lime and spoon races, tug of war between students, and even between teachers and parents (which was done twice, and each group won!), etc., all suitable for everybody of every age.

In the first half, there were lots of competitiveness. No one was quite sure of the house leading or losing. When the scores were shown/displayed to the crowd, it was House Canary (Yellow), leading, and House Finch (Red), at the last end! The house masters and mistresses took charge, giving motivation to those who needed it. Refreshments were made available, and there was an act of gymnastics displayed during this break, as well as other entertaining activities.

In the second half, however, things became a lot harder. Every house kept on pushing and House Canary, the leading house, weren’t coming first nor were they coming last in most games except for a few. After hours of fun, shouting, fear, excitement, jumping, hard work, and every feeling one can imagine, NIS Sports Day came to an end. Scores were calculated and House Canary was declared the winner!!!! NIS WAS YELLOW!!!!! Blue House came in second place, Red House was in the third position, and Green House was in the fourth position, all with very little difference among the scores.

House Canary members were overjoyed and filled with happiness! They were given their trophies and they took pictures while jubilating across the field. It was very beautiful to see. Every house did its best, but ultimately, only one house could emerge as the winner. This is an unforgettable day that brought memories and moments everyone would cherish forever.
